The notification that the removal of mattress tags is punishable by law is not directed to consumers but the mattress manufacturers. Have you ever wondered what the purpose of a mattress tag is? Well, it is to let consumers know exactly what is inside the mattress, i.e. what it is made of. They are there to serve the consumer. A mattress may be manufactured with a material some people are allergic to, so this information must be available for everybody. A mattress tag is a way to protect consumers from what they think they are paying for. Before the early 20th century, mattresses were made of a lot of different materials ranging in quality. A manufacturer may claim that a mattress is made of the finest cotton money can buy when it is just a mix of something like straw and paper. The situation becomes worse when the manufacturer uses recycled materials containing bacteria or bed bugs. A particular concern to the government was the risk of manufacturers reselling mattresses that had been in hospitals, and as a consequence, exposing the wider population to dangerous communicable diseases. When the government required that manufacturers add tags to a mattress's 'ingredients,' there were some who weren't using high-quality materials and, of course, didn't want consumers to know, so they ripped off the tags before the mattresses hit the retailers' showroom floors. It's for that reason that a required notice was added on every tag, stating that it's punishable by law to remove or damage a tag. May 9: Guernsey Liberation Day: -- Commemorates the island's May 9, 1945 liberation of the Channel Islands by the British after five years of German occupation during World War II. The Island or Bailiwick of Guernsey is one of two crown dependencies that make up the Channel Islands, the other and bigger of the two is the Bailiwick of Jersey. They are known as archipelagos and are located on the English Channel between England and France. German occupation began on June 30, 1940. Guernsey was officially occupied by the Germans on June 30, 1940, approximately eight months after the Second World War started. They are not part of the United Kingdom, but the U.K. is responsible for the defense and international relations of the island. However, the British Government decided to leave Guernsey undefended as German planes bombed the harbor in the capital parish of St. Peter Port, after mistaking a group of tomato lorries for a convoy of troop carriers. After 48 hours, German troops began to land and raise their flag. Half of the population, including children, had to be evacuated to the U.K. The invasion lasted for almost five years, and the island found itself under German rule as 'Hitler_s Island Madness,' becoming the most fortified place in the world. The island was the only British territory conquered by Hitler. Locals had most of their lands and belongings taken away by the Germans. Some were sent to prisons and camps, while others resisted through protests between 1940 and 1945. Many lost their families, homes, and lives. May 9, 1147: #BOTD: Minamoto No Yoritomo, founder and the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate and of Japan, ruling from 1192 until 1199, the first ruling shogun in the history of Japan, husband of Hojo Masako, who acted as Shikken (regent) after his death (d. February 9, 1199) is #born with the childhood name Oniwakamaru in Atsuta, Owari Province, Japan, the third son of Minamoto no Yoshitomo, heir of the Minamoto (Seiwa Genji) clan, and his official wife, Yura-Gozen, daughter of Fujiwara no Suenori, High Priest of Atsuta Shrine and a member of the powerful Fujiwara clan. Minamoto No Yoritomo belonged to Seiwa Genji's prestigious Kawachi Genji family. After successfully maneuvering himself to the position of rightful heir of the Minamoto clan, he led his clan against the Taira from his capital in Kamakura, beginning the Genpei War in 1180. After five years of civil war, the Minamoto clan finally defeated the Taira in the Battle of Dan-no-ura in 1185. Yoritomo established the supremacy of the samurai caste and the first shogunate (bakufu) which was to be centered around Kamakura, thus beginning the feudal age in Japan, which lasted until the 17th century. Minamoto No Yoritomo was ordained as a Buddhist monk in 1199 and left his home. He received the Buddhist name Bukoshogendaizenmon (Japanese: "All Questions On Contemporary Books") two days before he died aged 51 in Kamakura, Kamakura Shogunate, Japan. May 9, 1800: #BOTD: John Brown, Abolitionist leader (d. December 2, 1859) is #born in Torrington, Connecticut. On May 24, 1856, he led The Pottawatomie Massacre, when John Brown and his men killed five slavery supporters at Pottawatomie Creek, Kansas, hacking some into pieces with much of it done in front of their families. On October 16, 1859, he led John Brown's Raid On Harpers Ferry when he seized the Federal Arsenal at Harpers Ferry with about 20 followers. Inside the arsenal, Brown and his followers held 60 hostages and managed to hold out against the local militia, but three days later, U.S. Marines under the command of Col. Robert E. Lee stormed the arsenal after Brown refused to negotiate (with future confederate general J.E.B. Stuart) and was forcibly taken into custody after sustaining severe combat wounds. Ten of Brown's men, including two of his sons, were killed. Brown was convicted by the Commonwealth of Virginia of treason, murder, and inciting slaves to rebellion, and died when he was executed by hanging for treason, the first person executed for treason in the history of the United States, at Charles Town, West Virginia, for his October 16th raid on the U.S. Arsenal at Harper's Ferry assisted by about 20 followers. He is buried at The John Brown Farm Grounds in North Elba, New York. John Brown had originally asked Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, both of whom he had met in his transformative years as an abolitionist in Springfield, Massachusetts, to join him in his raid, but Tubman was prevented by illness, and Douglass declined, as he believed Brown's plan would fail. The Harpers Ferry Raid and Brown's Virginia v. John Brown trial both were covered extensively in national newspapers, escalated tensions that led, a year later, to the South's long-threatened secession and the American Civil War. Southerners feared that others would soon follow in Brown's footsteps, encouraging and arming slave rebellions. He was a hero and icon in the North. Union soldiers marched to the new song "John Brown's Body", that portrayed him as a heroic martyr. Newly-freed African Americans sang the same song, and they often lowered their voices when speaking of Brown, as if he were a saint. Brown has been variously described as a heroic martyr and visionary, and as a madman and terrorist. May 9, 1844: #BOTD: Belle Boyd, dubbed "The Cleopatra Of The Secession", "Siren Of The Shenandoah", and later "The Confederate Mata Hari", Confederate spy (d. June 11, 1900) is #born Maria Isabella Boyd in Martinsburg, Virginia (now part of West Virginia). Belle Boyd was arrested on July 29, 1864 by Union troops and brought to the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C. the next day. Boyd had been arrested at least six times before but somehow evaded incarceration... By late July 1862, detective Allan Pinkerton had assigned three men to work on her case, and she was finally captured by Union officials after her lover gave her up. An inquiry was held on August 7, 1862, concerning violations of orders that Boyd be kept in close custody. She was held for a month before being released on August 29, 1862, when she was exchanged at Fort Monroe. She was arrested again in June 1863, but was released after contracting typhoid fever. Belle Boyd conducted her spy operations from her father's hotel in Front Royal, Virginia, and provided valuable information to Confederate General Stonewall Jackson in 1862. Boyd's espionage career began by chance. According to her 1866 account, a band of Union army soldiers heard that she had Confederate flags in her room on July 4, 1861, and they came to investigate. They hung a Union flag outside her home. Then one of the men cursed at her mother, which enraged Boyd. She pulled out a pistol and shot the man, who died some hours later. A board of inquiry exonerated her of murder, but sentries were posted around the house and officers kept close track of her activities. She profited from this enforced familiarity, charming at least one of the officers whom she named in her memoir as Captain Daniel Keily... She wrote in her memoir that she was indebted to Keily "for some very remarkable effusions, some withered flowers, and a great deal of important information." She conveyed those secrets to Confederate officers via her slave Eliza Hopewell, who carried them in a hollowed-out watch case. Boyd was caught on her first attempt at spying and told that she could be sentenced to death. General James Shields and his staff gathered in the parlor of the local hotel in mid-May 1862. Boyd hid in the closet in the room, eavesdropping through a knothole that she enlarged in the door. She learned that Shields had been ordered east from Front Royal, Virginia. That night, she rode through Union lines, using false papers to bluff her way past the sentries, and reported the news to Colonel Turner Ashby, who was scouting for the Confederates. She then returned to town. When the Confederates advanced on Front Royal on May 23, Boyd ran to greet Stonewall Jackson's men, avoiding enemy fire that put bullet holes in her skirt, as according to her memoir. She urged an officer to inform Jackson that "the Yankee force is very small [...] Tell him to charge right down and he will catch them all." Jackson did and wrote a note of gratitude to her: "I thank you, for myself and for the army, for the immense service that you have rendered your country today." For her contributions, she was awarded the Southern Cross of Honor. Jackson also gave her captain and honorary aide-de-camp positions. In March 1864, Boyd attempted to travel to England, but she was intercepted by a Union blockade and sent to Canada where she met Union naval officer Samuel Wylde Hardinge. The two married in England. and had a daughter, Grace. Boyd became an actress in England after her husband's death to support her daughter. Following the death of her husband in 1866, she and her daughter returned to the United States. Boyd assumed the stage name Nina Benjamin to perform in several cities, eventually ending up in New Orleans where she married John Swainston Hammond in March 1869, a former British Army officer who fought for the Union Army during the Civil War. They had two sons and two daughters; their first son died as an infant. Boyd divorced Hammond in 1884 and married Nathaniel Rue High in 1885. She subsequently began touring the country giving dramatic lectures of her life as a Civil War spy. Boyd published a highly fictionalized narrative of her war experiences in the two-volume Belle Boyd in Camp and Prison. She died of a heart attack in Kilbourn City, Wisconsin at age 56. She is buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Wisconsin Dells, with members of the Grand Army Of The Republic as her pallbearers. For years, her grave simply read: "BELLE BOYD | CONFEDERATE SPY | BORN IN VIRGINIA | DIED IN WISCONSIN | ERECTED BY A COMRADE". May 9, 1860: #BOTD: #HBD! J. M. Barrie, Scottish novelist and playwright, best remembered as the creator of Peter Pan (d. June 19, 1937) is #born James Matthew Barrie in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland. Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM was educated in Scotland and then moved to London, where he wrote a number of successful novels and plays. There he met the Llewelyn Davies Boys, the five orphaned sons of handsome barrister Arthur Arthur Llewelyn Davies and Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, the beautiful daughter of French cartoonist George du Maurier. The family inspired him to write about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens (first included in Barrie's adult novel The Little White Bird), then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, a "fairy play" about an ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland. Peter Pan is a free-spirited and mischievous young boy who can fly and never grows up, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood having adventures on the mythical island of Neverland as the leader of the Lost Boys, interacting with fairies, pirates, mermaids, Native Americans, and occasionally ordinary children from the world outside Neverland. Peter Pan has become a cultural icon symbolizing youthful innocence and escapism. In addition to two distinct works by Barrie, the character has been featured in a variety of media and merchandise, both adapting and expanding on Barrie's works. These include the 1924 silent film, 1953 Disney animated film; a 2003 dramatic/live-action film; two television specials starring Mary Martin, Cyril Ritchard and Sondra Lee; a television series and many other works. Although he continued to write successfully, Peter Pan overshadowed his other work, and is credited with popularising the name Wendy. Barrie unofficially adopted the Davies Boys following the deaths of their parents. Barrie was made a baronet by George V on 14 June 1913, and a member of the Order of Merit in the 1922 New Year Honours. Before his death, he gave the rights to the Peter Pan works to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, which continues to benefit from them. Great Ormond Street Hospital (informally GOSH or Great Ormond Street, formerly the Hospital for Sick Children) is a children's hospital located in the Bloomsbury area of the London Borough of Camden, and a part of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital is the largest centre for child heart surgery in the UK and one of the largest centres for heart transplantation in the world. In 1962 they developed the first heart and lung bypass machine for children. With children's book author Roald Dahl, they developed an improved shunt valve for children with water on the brain (hydrocephalus), and non-invasive (percutaneous) heart valve replacements. They did the first UK clinical trials of the rubella vaccine, and the first bone marrow transplant and gene therapy for severe combined immunodeficiency. It is closely associated with University College London (UCL) and in partnership with the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, which is adjacent to it, is the largest centre for research and postgraduate teaching in children's health in Europe. J. M. Barrie died of pneumonia at a nursing home in Manchester Street, Marylebone, London, England, aged 77. Elements of Lee's army beat the Union army to the critical crossroads of the Spotsylvania Court House in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, and began entrenching. Fighting occurred on and off from May 8 through May 21, 1864, as Grant tried various schemes to break the Confederate line. In the end, the battle was tactically inconclusive, but both sides declared victory. The Confederacy declared victory because they were able to hold their defenses. The United States declared victory because the Federal offensive continued and Lee's army suffered losses that could not be replaced. With almost 32,000 casualties on both sides, Spotsylvania was the costliest battle of the campaign. Howard Carter, English archaeologist, Egyptologist and historian who became world-famous after discovering the intact tomb of the 18th Dynasty Pharaoh, Tutankhamun in November 1922, the best-preserved pharaonic tomb ever found in the Valley of the Kings (d. March 2, 1939) is #born in Kensington, an affluent district in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in the West of central London, England. On November 4, 1922, Howard Carter discovered, after seven difficult years of searching, the first concealed step of what he knew was going to turn out to be the lost tomb of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun (King Tut) in the Valley of the Kings at Luxor, Egypt. By February 1923 the antechamber had been cleared of everything but two sentinel statues. A day and time were selected to unseal the tomb with about twenty appointed witnesses that included Carter's financial backer Lord Carnarvon, several Egyptian officials, museum representatives and the staff of the Government Press Bureau. On February 17, 1923 at just after two o'clock, the seal was broken. The child-king Tutankhamen became pharaoh at age nine and died around 1352 B.C. at age 19. The tomb was found mostly intact, containing numerous priceless items now exhibited in Egypt's National Museum in Cairo. There were 5,398 items found in the tomb, including a solid gold coffin, face mask, thrones, archery bows, trumpets, a lotus chalice, two Imiut fetishes, gold toe stalls, furniture, food, wine, sandals, and fresh linen underwear. Howard Carter took 10 years to catalog the items. Recent analysis suggests a dagger recovered from the tomb had an iron blade made from a meteorite; study of artifacts of the time including other artifacts from Tutankhamun's tomb could provide valuable insights into metalworking technologies around the Mediterranean at the time. Tutankhamun (c. 1342 - c. 1325 BC), was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who was the last of his royal family to rule during the end of the 18th Dynasty (ruled c. 1334 - 1325 BC in the conventional chronology) during the New Kingdom of Egyptian history. His father was the pharaoh Akhenaten, believed to be the mummy found in the tomb KV55. His mother is his father's sister, identified through DNA testing as an unknown mummy referred to as "The Younger Lady" who was found in KV35. Tutankhamun took the throne at eight or nine years of age under the unprecedented viziership of his eventual successor, Ay, to whom he may have been related. He married his half sister Ankhesenamun. During their marriage they lost two daughters, one at 5-6 months of pregnancy and the other shortly after birth at full-term. His names-Tutankhaten and Tutankhamun-are thought to mean "Living image of Aten" and "Living image of Amun", with Aten replaced by Amun after Akhenaten's death. A small number of Egyptologists, including Battiscombe Gunn, believe the translation may be incorrect and closer to "The-life-of-Aten-is-pleasing" or, as Professor Gerhard Fecht believes, reads as "One-perfect-of-life-is-Aten". Tutankhamun restored the Ancient Egyptian religion after its dissolution by his father, enriched and endowed the priestly orders of two important cults and began restoring old monuments damaged during the previous Amarna period. He moved his father's remains to the Valley of the Kings as well as moving the capital from Akhetaten to Thebes. Tutankhamun was physically disabled with a deformity of his left foot along with bone necrosis that required the use of a cane, several of which were found in his tomb. He had other health issues including scoliosis and had contracted several strains of malaria. The 1922 discovery by Howard Carter of Tutankhamun's nearly intact tomb, in excavations funded by Lord Carnarvon, received worldwide press coverage. With over 5,000 artifacts, it sparked a renewed public interest in ancient Egypt, for which Tutankhamun's mask, now in the Egyptian Museum, remains a popular symbol. The deaths of a few involved in the discovery of Tutankhamun's mummy have been popularly attributed to the curse of the pharaohs. He has, since the discovery of his intact tomb, been referred to colloquially as "King Tut". Some of his treasure has traveled worldwide with unprecedented response. The Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities allowed tours beginning in 1962 with the exhibit at the Louvre in Paris, followed by the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art in Tokyo, Japan. The exhibits drew in millions of visitors. The 1972-1979 exhibit was shown in United States, Soviet Union, Japan, France, Canada, and West Germany. There were no international exhibitions again until 2005-2011. This exhibit featured Tutankhamun's predecessors from the 18th Dynasty, including Hatshepsut and Akhenaten, but did not include the golden death mask. The treasures 2019-2022 tour began in Los Angeles and will end in 2022 at the new Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, which, for the first time, will be displaying the full Tutankhamun collection, gathered from all of Egypt's museums and storerooms. Howard Carter died at his London flat at 49 Albert Court, next to the Royal Albert Hall aged 64 from Hodgkin's disease. He was buried in Putney Vale Cemetery in London on March 6, nine people attending his funeral. The epitaph on his gravestone reads: "May your spirit live, may you spend millions of years, you who love Thebes, sitting with your face to the north wind, your eyes beholding happiness", a quotation taken from the Wishing Cup of Tutankhamun, and "O night, spread thy wings over me as the imperishable stars". August 24, 1967) is #born Henry John Kaiser in Sprout Brook, New York, the son of Franz and Anna Marie (nee Yops) Kaiser, ethnic German immigrants. Prior to World War II, Kaiser was involved in the construction industry; his company was one of those that built the Hoover Dam. He established the Kaiser Shipyards, which built Liberty ships during World War II, after which he formed Kaiser Aluminum and Kaiser Steel. Kaiser was involved in large construction projects such as civic centers and dams, and invested in real estate, later moving into television broadcasting. In support of his Hawaii ventures, Kaiser induced Warner Brothers to copy the formula of its popular series 77 Sunset Strip as new TV series Hawaiian Eye. Though actually filmed at WB studios in Burbank, California, the show featured private detectives based at Kaiser's Hilton Hawaiian Village. (The Hilton Hawaiian Village was featured in Hawaii 5-0 with many scenes filmed at the resort.) Kaiser eventually bought and built a chain of radio and television stations which became known as Kaiser Broadcasting. May 9, 1920: #BOTD: Celia Sanchez, Cuban revolutionary, politician, researcher and archivist, key member of the Cuban Revolution and the closest and most trusted colleague and advisor of Fidel Castro (d. January 11, 1980) is #born in Media Luna, Oriente, Cuba, but eventually moved to Pilon, Cuba. Her father, Dr. Manuel Sanchez, was a doctor, and she grew up in relative affluence. Her mother, Acacia, died early in her childhood. At age six she started suffering with neurosis. She was one of eight children. She was well-educated but never attended university. After high school, Sanchez continuously helped with her father's practice until she began to focus on the Cuban Revolution alongside Fidel Castro. Her father's occupation as a doctor and working with him provided her with a cover and connections to become a discreet member of the 26th Of July Movement. Sanchez was one of the founders of the Cuban revolution and considered to be a heroine who would, later on, continue to serve in office as secretary to the presidency of the Council of Ministers and in the Department of Services of the Council of State. Sanchez joined the Cuban Revolution following the US-fostered 1952 Cuban Doup D'Etat, when The Cuban Constitutional Army, led by Fulgencio Batista, intervened in the election that was scheduled to be held on June 1, 1952 and staged a coup that established a de facto military dictatorship in the country with Fulgencio Batista as dictator, a coup referred to in Cuba as The Batistazo. She was the founder of The 26th Of July Movement in Manzanillo. She started as an arms runner, later began working as a combatant in the Cuban Revolution. She was considered to be the first female guerilla of the Sierra Maestra. With her hard work within the movement, she became the first woman to join the guerillas and eventually become a part of the rebel army's general staff. Sanchez organized and planned the landing of the Granma, the yacht used to transport 82 fighters of The Cuban Revolution from Mexico to Cuba in November 1956 to overthrow Batista, as well as supplying the army with reinforcements. She worked alongside Frank Pais and Haydee Santamaria. Together with Frank Pais, she was one of the first women to assemble a combat squad. She made arrangements throughout the southwest coast region of Cuba for the Granma landing, and was responsible for organizing reinforcements once the revolutionaries landed. In 1957, she became the first woman to join the guerrilla army and served as a messenger. She would place telegrams inside a butterfly flower, so the messages remained secret. As a member of the general staff of the Rebel Army she supplied Che Guevara and others with weapons and occasionally with food and medical supplies. During the mid to late 1960s, Rene Vallejo, Castro's physician since 1958, and Sanchez became the Cuban leader's two closest companions. Sanchez was bestowed with the title of Secretary to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and served in the Department of Services of the Council of State until her death. Sanchez archived many documents, letters and notes of the revolution, leading to the creation in 1964 of Oficina de Asuntos Historicos del Consejo de Estado, an institution for the preservation of historical documents. The historical documents within the institution included interviews from soldiers who fought in the guerrilla as well as letters, writings and photos. This collection of primary sources has served as the country's official archive about the Cuban Revolution. By the Cuban people, the archive has been known as El Fondo De Celia (Spanish: "The Background Of Celia"). Celia Sanchez died of lung cancer during a time of political and economic unrest at an undisclosed location; her legacy is embedded in the Cuban national identity; as a result, Castro began a slow period of apparent mental, emotional, spiritual and political decline. Castro commemorated her life by proclaiming her symbol to the Revolution. He stated in a speech outside the hospital dedicated to her: "I truly believe that this is the best form of tribute to pay to someone who dedicated herself to duty, without resting for a moment, without forgetting one single detail; and I believe, sincerely, that this is the most heartfelt, profound and revolutionary homage that one can give to a compatriot who gave her life for the Revolution." Many commemorate her crucial role in the revolution by putting her name on schools, hospitals, and various community centers, from Cuba to Zimbabwe. People of Manzanillo use the altar of the Caridad del Cobra Virgin as a marriage altar signifying her dedication to the Cuban Revolution. The monument is as if Celia Sanchez is wearing a dress, stiff and enormous, like the jeweled dress worn by the Caridad Virgin. A memorial to and mausoleum for Celia Sanchez was built in Parque Lenin, a recreational park complex situated south of Havana; however, as of November 2014 the remains of Celia Sanchez are interred in the Colon Cemetery, Havana. The Celia Sanchez Memorial in Manzanillo also honors her name, and her face appears in the watermark on Cuban peso banknotes. Cuba continued to honor Sanchez achievements; ten years after her death, they created a coin with the value of 10 pesos (1990). Furthermore, Celia's memory has had a large impact far beyond the remembrance of one woman in the Cuban Revolution but rather encompasses the standards of the new Cuban national identity. Celia Sanchez paved the way for the idealism for Cuba's new woman by showing women's capabilities in the leadership, care taking and physical labor. Simplicity, modesty, femininity, selflessness, austerity and devotion are some of the key personal traits attributed of Celia Sanchez; however, these virtues are also attributed to the ideal of Cuba's new woman. Celia Sanchez remains a symbol to Cuban society that women are capable of balancing physical labor with care taking, strength with femininity and leadership with modesty. May 9, 1920: #BOTD: Frank Perdue, American businessman, for many years the president and CEO of Perdue Farms, now one of the largest chicken-producing companies in the United States (d. March 31, 2005) is #born Franklin Parsons Perdue in Salisbury, Maryland. Perdue Farms was founded in 1920 by Arthur Perdue with his wife, Pearl Perdue who had been keeping a small flock of chickens. Their son, Frank, joined the company in 1939 at age 19 after dropping out of college. Now recognized as a visionary, Frank Perdue's promotion of the Perdue brand through high-profile advertising resulted in its being the first well-known brand of chicken in the U.S. He turned over leadership of Perdue Farms to his son, Jim Perdue, in 1991. Perdue Farms developed a specialized chicken-feed that included marigold blossoms, which imparted a characteristic golden yellow hue to the skins of his chickens. In the 1980s, Perdue twice sought assistance from then-Mafia boss Paul Castellano to fend off a union's effort to represent workers at his company, according to a federal commission on labor corruption. In 1971, Perdue Farm embarked on its first major advertising campaign and had contracted the firm of Scali, McCabe, Sloves. The firm came up with the idea of putting Perdue on television himself, with the tag line, "It takes a tough man to make a tender chicken." This was fairly radical because at the time, CEOs were not usually public spokespersons for their firms. The first commercial, shot in the city park in Salisbury, was ranked by Advertising Age as one of the best campaigns of the year. It was so successful that he went on to appear in over 200 of Perdue Farms' television commercials, although he was known for his shyness as well. Many of the commercials were known for Perdue actually encouraging people to voice any complaints or dissatisfaction with Perdue products, usually ending with Perdue stating "Say whatever you have to say; I can take it". Through this advertising, Perdue is credited with creating the first brand for chicken. In the debate, Chamberlain's government was criticised not only by the Opposition but also by respected members of his own party. The Opposition forced a vote, effectively a motion of no confidence, which the government won with a greatly reduced majority. Over a quarter of Conservative members voted with the Opposition or abstained, despite a three line whip (a strict instruction to attend and vote, breach of which would normally have serious consequences), and this made it clear that support for Chamberlain in his own party was crumbling. There were calls for national unity to be established by formation of an all-party coalition, but it was not possible for Chamberlain to reach agreement with the opposition Labour and Liberal parties who refused to serve under his leadership, though they would accept a different Conservative leader. On board is the latest Enigma machine which Allied cryptographers later use to break coded German messages. German submarine U-110 was a Type IXB U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. Her capture provided a number of secret cipher documents to the British. Later given the code name "Operation Primrose", U-110's capture was one of the biggest secrets of the war, remaining so even to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was only told of the capture by Winston Churchill in January 1942, seven months later. The Enigma machine is an encryption device developed and used in the early- to mid-20th century to protect commercial, diplomatic and military communication. It was employed extensively by Nazi Germany during World War II, in all branches of the German military. Enigma has an electromechanical rotor mechanism that scrambles the 26 letters of the alphabet. In typical use, one person enters text on the Enigma's keyboard and another person writes down which of 26 lights above the keyboard lights up at each key press. If plain text is entered, the lit-up letters are the encoded ciphertext. Entering ciphertext transforms it back into readable plaintext. The rotor mechanism changes the electrical connections between the keys and the lights with each keypress. The security of the system depends on Enigma machine settings that were changed daily, based on secret key lists distributed in advance, and on other settings that change for each message. The receiving station has to know and use the exact settings employed by the transmitting station to successfully decrypt a message. As used in practice, the Enigma encryption was broken from 1932 by cryptanalytic attacks from the Polish Cipher Bureau, which passed its techniques to their French and British allies in 1939. Subsequently, a dedicated decryption centre was established by the United Kingdom at Bletchley Park as part of the Ultra program for the rest of the war. While Germany introduced a series of improvements to Enigma, and these hampered decryption efforts to varying degrees, they did not ultimately prevent Britain and its allies from exploiting Enigma-encoded messages as a major source of intelligence during the war. The flow of communications intelligence from Ultra's decryption of Enigma, Lorenz and other ciphers shortened the war significantly significantly altered the length and outcome of the Second World War. Minow gives his Vast Wasteland Speech, officially known as the Television and the Public Interest Speech. The speech was Minow's first major speech after he was appointed chairman of the FCC by President John F Kennedy. May 9, 1974: Political Scandals Of The United States: Richard Nixon: The Presidency Of Richard Nixon: The Watergate Scandal: The Impeachment Process Against Richard Nixon: -- The United States House Committee on the Judiciary opens formal and public impeachment hearings against President Richard Nixon. The impeachment process against Richard Nixon began in the United States House Of Representatives on October 30, 1973, following the "Saturday Night Massacre" episode of the Watergate Scandal. The House Committee on the Judiciary set up an impeachment inquiry staff and began investigations into possible impeachable offenses by Richard Nixon, the 37th president of the United States. The process was formally initiated on February 6, 1974, when the House granted the Judiciary Committee authority to investigate whether sufficient grounds existed to impeach President Nixon of high crimes and misdemeanors under Article II, Section 4, of the United States Constitution. This investigation was undertaken one year after the United States Senate established the Select Committee on Presidential Campaign Activities to investigate the 1972 break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C., and the Republican Nixon administration's attempted cover-up of its involvement; during those hearings the scope of the scandal became apparent and the existence of the Nixon White House tapes was revealed. Following an April 1974 subpoena from the Judiciary Committee, edited transcripts of 42 taped White House conversations relevant to the Watergate cover-up were made public by the president. But the committee pressed for the audio tapes themselves, and subsequently issued subpoenas for additional tapes, all of which Nixon refused. That same month he also refused to comply with a subpoena from special prosecutor Leon Jaworski for 64 Watergate-related tapes. Ultimately, on July 24, 1974, the United States Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision against the president, ordering him to comply. The Democratic-led Judiciary Committee's formal hearings on the impeachment inquiry of President Nixon that began on May 9, 1974 culminated on July 27-30, 1974, when they approved three articles of impeachment, which charged the president with: 1) obstruction of justice in attempting to impede the investigation of the Watergate break-in, protect those responsible, and conceal the existence of other illegal activities; 2) abuse of power by using the office of the presidency on multiple occasions, dating back to the first year of his administration (1969), to unlawfully use federal agencies, such as the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as establishing a covert White House special investigative unit, to violate the constitutional rights of citizens and interfere with lawful investigations; and 3) contempt of Congress by refusing to comply with congressional subpoenas. These articles were reported to the House of Representatives for final action, with 7 of the committee's 17 Republicans joining all 21 of its Democrats in voting in favor of one or more of the articles. Two other articles were debated in committee but were rejected. Based on the strength of the evidence presented and the bipartisan support for the articles in committee, House leaders of both political parties concluded that Nixon's impeachment by the full House was a certainty if it reached the House floor for a final vote, and that his conviction in a Senate trial was a distinct possibility. On August 5, 1974, Nixon released a transcript of one of the additional conversations to the public, known as the "smoking gun" tape, which made clear his complicity in the Watergate cover-up. Reaction to this disclosure was swift-he lost the support of his most loyal defenders in Congress with respect to the obstruction of justice article of the charges. Republican congressional leaders met with and told Nixon that both his impeachment and his conviction were inevitable. Thereupon, Nixon gave up the struggle to remain in office, resigning the presidency on August 9, 1974, before the full House could vote on the articles of impeachment. Although arrangements for a final House vote along with a Senate trial were being made at the time, further formal action was rendered unnecessary by his resignation, so the House brought the impeachment process against him to an official close two weeks later. Nixon was the first U.S. president in over a century, since Andrew Johnson in 1868, to be the subject of formal impeachment proceedings in the House of Representatives. Two of Nixon's successors have undergone similar proceedings, and both, like Johnson, were impeached but then acquitted at the consequent Senate trial. May 9: Buttons Day (Hurray For Buttons Day): -- An annual celebration of the button, a small knob or disk secured to an article, mostly clothing, and used as a fastener with a buttonhole or loop. It also refers to a circular metal or plastic badge that bears a stamped design or printed slogan. For example, a campaign button. The oldest known button dates back to 5000 B.C. in the Indus River Valley and was made from a curved shell. It was not until the 13th century that buttons served as fasteners, and this, along with buttonholes, first appeared in Germany before spreading throughout Europe. Buttons are made from almost any material in the world from plastic to metal. Their composition often reflects the popular materials of the era in which they were made. Today, the most common materials are hard plastic, metals, seashells, or wood. They were once made by artisans, artists, and craftspeople, out of raw materials or found objects such as fossils, or a combination of both. Nowadays, factories produce them in large quantities. Button collecting is quite popular in the United States. People collect buttons for a variety of reasons; for future use, for casual collecting, or for competitive collecting. Hobbies magazine organized a hobby show in Chicago in which button collectors participated. Later that year, they formed the National Button Society and held their first button show. Many state and local button clubs were formed in the following decade, holding their own button shows. The National Button Society has over 3,000 members on four different continents. Post, American businessman, innovator, breakfast cereal and foods manufacturer and pioneer in the prepared-food industry, founder of Post Foods, now named Post Consumer Brands (b. October 26, 1854) #dies when, despondent over his ongoing stomach illness, he died by a self-inflicted gunshot at his home, aged 59 years old. His 27-year-old daughter, Marjorie Merriweather Post, inherited his company along with most of his vast fortune, one of the largest of the early 20th century. Marjorie Merriweather Post later married financier E. F. Hutton and owned a 177-acre (72 ha) estate on Long Island's North Shore called "Hillwood." Marjorie sold the estate in 1951 for 200K USD to Long Island University, which founded its residential C.W. Post College in 1954, marking the 100th anniversary of C.W. Post's birth. For a while named the C.W. Post Center and then the C.W. Post Campus, what was C.W. Post College has now become mainly a commuter campus called LIU/Post, and it has about 8,500 full- and part-time students and over 100,000 alumni. The World War II Liberty Ship SS C. W. Post was named in his honor. C. W. Post was born Charles William Post in Springfield, Illinois. The stress of overwork was twice responsible for his having a nervous breakdown. After his second breakdown in 1891, Post began a period of extensive travels in search of a cure, coming to take particular interest in the chemistry of digestion. After a period traversing Europe, Post visited the Battle Creek Sanitarium of Battle Creek, Michigan, a facility operated by John Harvey Kellogg (brother of Kellogg Company founder Will Keith Kellogg). Post has been accused of stealing several of Kellogg's recipes, including Kellogg's Caramel Coffee Cereal (Post's Postum), Cornflakes (Toasties), and Malted Nuts (Grape Nuts). In 1895, Post founded Postum Cereal Co., with his first product, Postum cereal beverage. Post's first breakfast cereal premiered in 1897, and he named the product Grape-Nuts cereal because of the fruity aroma noticed during the manufacturing process and the nutty crunch of the finished product. In 1904, he followed up the Grape Nuts label with a brand of corn flakes, which was first called Elijah's Manna before being renamed Post Toasties in 1908. The British government refused to allow Post to market his cereal in the United Kingdom using the name Elijah's Manna, stating that it was sacrilegious. In 1906, Post invested some of his substantial earnings from his food products manufacturing into Texas real estate, purchasing a massive 225,000-acre (91,000 ha) tract in Garza and Lynn Counties. Post platted a new town, which he called Post City. Shade trees were planted, farm parcels laid out, and a hotel, school, churches, and a department store were constructed for the new Garza County seat. In 1907, Collier's Weekly published an article questioning the claim made in advertisements for Grape Nuts that it could cure appendicitis. Post responded with advertisements questioning the mental capacity of the article's author, and Collier's Weekly sued for libel. The case was heard in 1910, and Post was fined 50K USD. The decision was overturned on appeal, but advertisements for Postum products stopped making such claims. Post was a staunch opponent of the trade union movement and was remembered by the National Association of Manufacturers as one who "opposed bitterly boycotts, strikes, lockouts, picketing and other forms of coercion in the relations between employer and employee." Post was also a leading public advocate of the open shop system. However, as compensation, Post paid the highest wages, and provided bonuses and benefits. Near Battle Creek, he had model homes built that were sold to employees under certain conditions. At the end of 1913, the chronically ill Post's health deteriorated to the point that he canceled public appearances. In early March 1914, Post was believed to be suffering from appendicitis and was rushed via a nonstop train from California to Rochester, Minnesota, to be operated on by Drs. William and Charles Mayo, regarded as the preeminent surgeons of the day. Mayo brothers operated (successfully) sometime between March 5 and 10, 1914, without any relief from the life long abdominal pains, according to the book American Empress: The Life and Times of Marjorie Merriweather Post. The breakfast cereal magnate returned home to Santa Barbara. May 9, 1970: #DOTD: #RIP: Walter Reuther, American union leader, civil rights activist, environmentalist, founder of the United Auto Workers (UAW) who built it into one of the most progressive labor unions in American history, co-founder of the AFL-CIO, NAACP board member (b. September 1, 1907) #dies aged 62 in what was likely an assassination attempt along with his wife May, architect Oscar Stonorov, Reuther's bodyguard William Wolfman, pilot George O. Evans and co-pilot Joseph U. Karaffa when their chartered Learjet 23 crashed in flames at 9:33 p.m. Eastern Time in Pellston, Michigan. Journalist Michael Parenti wrote, "Reuther's demise appears as part of a truncation of liberal and radical leadership that included the deaths of four national figures: President John Kennedy, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, and Senator Robert Kennedy." The plane, arriving from Detroit in rain and fog, was on final approach to Pellston Regional Airport in Pellston, Michigan, near the UAW's recreational and educational facility at Black Lake, Michigan. The National Transportation Safety Board discovered that the plane's altimeter was missing parts, some incorrect parts were installed, and one of its parts had been installed upside down, which in light of two earlier attempted assassinations and a similar near-crash in a small plane in 1969 makes it likely that Reuther may have been murdered a very messy manner, given the many innocent collateral deaths. Reuther's funeral was held on May 15, 1970, at Ford Auditorium in Detroit, Michigan. An estimated 3,400 people were in attendance. Among others, Coretta Scott King eulogized: "Walter Reuther was to black people, the most widely known and respected white labor leader in the nation. He was there when the storm clouds were thick. We remember him in Montgomery. He was in Birmingham. He marched with us in Selma, and Jackson, Mississippi, and in Washington. ... Only yesterday, there he was again in Charleston, South Carolina, the leader of a million and a half workers giving personal support to a strike of only 400 black women. ... He was a big man, so of course he had enemies and detractors. He had the courage to be with the minority when it was right. He was a simple man in his personal life, a rare quality in these flamboyant times ... but if his ways were simple, his ideas were grand. He aroused the imagination of millions. ... He was fighting the fight of the whole world." Walter and May Reuther's ashes were spread in a simple ceremony on the hilltop overlooking the Main Lobby area of United Auto Workers Local 1268, 1100 West Chrysler Drive, Belvidere, Illinois. Walter Reuther was born Walter Philip Reuther in Wheeling, West Virginia to German-American parents. Walter Reuthersaw labor movements not as narrow special interest groups but as instruments to advance social justice and human rights in democratic societies. He leveraged the UAW's resources and influence to advocate for workers' rights, civil rights, women's rights, universal health care, public education, affordable housing, environmental stewardship and nuclear nonproliferation around the world. He believed in Swedish-style social democracy and societal change through nonviolent civil disobedience. He cofounded the AFL-CIO in 1955 with George Meany. He survived two attempted assassinations, including one at home where he was struck by a 12-gauge shotgun blast fired through his kitchen window, and there is evidence that his death in a plane crash was caused by the sabotage of the plane's altimeter. He was the fourth and longest serving president of the UAW, serving from 1946 until his death in 1970. As the leader of five million autoworkers including retirees and their families, Reuther was influential inside the Democratic Party. Following the Bay Of Pigs in 1961, JFK sent Reuther to Cuba to negotiate a prisoner exchange with Fidel Castro. He was instrumental in spearheading the creation of the Peace Corps and in marshaling support for the Civil Rights Act Of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Medicare and Medicaid, and the Fair Housing Act. He met weekly in 1964 and 1965 with President Lyndon B. Johnson at the White House to discuss policies and legislation for the Great Society and War On Poverty. The Republican Party was wary of Reuther, leading presidential candidate Richard Nixon to say about John F. Kennedy during the 1960 election, "I can think of nothing so detrimental to this nation than for any President to owe his election to, and therefore be a captive of, a political boss like Walter Reuther." Conservative politician Barry Goldwater declared that "[Reuther] was more dangerous to our country than Sputnik or anything Soviet Russia might do." A powerful ally of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement, Reuther marched with King in Detroit (Detroit Walk To Freedom), Selma (Selma To Montgomery Marches), Birmingham (The Birmingham Campaign), Montgomery (Selma To Montgomery Marches), and Jackson (The March Against Fear). When King and others including children were jailed in Birmingham, Alabama, and King authored his famous Letter From Birmingham Jail, Reuther arranged 160K USD for the protestors' release. Long, American Democratic politician and United States Senator from Louisiana from 1948 until 1987, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, serving for fifteen years, from 1966 to 1981, during the implementation of President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society and War on Poverty programs, Assistant Majority Leader (Senate Majority Whip) from 1965 to 1969, called by The Wall Street Journal "the fourth branch of government", the long-serving U.S. Senator from Louisiana (b. November 3, 1918) #dies of heart failure in Washington, D.C., aged 84. At the time of his death, Russell Long was the last living former U.S. senator who assumed office in the 1940s. The funeral was held in Baton Rouge, and included eulogies delivered by his grandson, attorney Russell Long Mosely, and former colleagues Johnston and Breaux. He is buried at Roselawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Russell B. Long was born Huey Pierce Long III in Shreveport, Louisiana; the son of Senators Huey Long and Rose McConnell Long, his father arrived shortly after his birth and changed his name to Russell in order to name him after Russell Billiu, his mother's favorite cousin. Russell Billiu Long served during the administrations of eight U.S. presidents, from Truman to Reagan. According to biographer Bob Mann, Long "became a leading voice for the plight of the elderly, the disabled, the working poor and the middle class." Long quietly wielded enormous power in the Senate and shaped some of the most significant tax legislation of the twentieth century. While a student at LSU, Long met and married Katherine Hattic. They had two daughters, Kay and Pamela. In 1969 they divorced and he married Carolyn Bason, to whom he remained married until his death. As chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Long held jurisdiction over 100 percent of all federal revenue and 40 percent of all government spending, including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment insurance, welfare and food assistance programs, foreign trade, and tariffs. In 1980 he was voted the most effective chairman and most effective debater by his colleagues in a U.S. News & World Report survey. In a 1982 survey, Long was voted the most influential Democrat by his Senate colleagues. May 9, 1919: #DOTD: #RIP: James Reese Europe, African American ragtime and early jazz bandleader, arranger, and composer, the leading figure on the African Americans music scene of New York City in the 1910s whom Eubie Blake called "The Martin Luther King Of Music" (b. February 22, 1881) #dies when one of his drummers Herbert Wright became very agitated, threw his drumsticks down in a seemingly unwarranted outburst of anger, claimed Europe did not treat him well and that he was tired of getting blamed for others' mistakes., and lunged for Europe with a penknife and stabbed him in the neck. Europe had been feeling ill all day, but wanted to go on with a concert which was to be the first of three in Boston's Mechanics Hall. During the intermission of that last performance, Europe went to have a talk with two of his drummers, Steve and Herbert Wright. Europe criticized some of their behavior, such as walking off stage during others' performances, which provoked Herbert Wright to stab him. After the stabbing, Europe told his band to finish the set and he would see them the next morning. To Europe and his band the wound seemed superficial. As he was carried away, he told them "I'll get along alright"; however, at the hospital, they could not stop the bleeding, and he died hours later. Herbert Wright was later convicted of manslaughter, and served eight years in prison. News of Europe's death spread fast. Composer and band leader W. C. Handy wrote: "The man who had just come through the baptism of war's fire and steel without a mark had been stabbed by one of his own musicians ... The sun was in the sky. The new day promised peace. But all the suns had gone down for Jim Europe, and Harlem didn't seem the same." Europe was granted the first ever public funeral for a black American in the city of New York. Tanney Johnson said of his death: "Before Jim Europe came to New York, the colored man knew nothing but Negro dances and porter's work. All that has been changed. Jim Europe was the living open sesame to the colored porters of this city. He took them from their porters' places and raised them to positions of importance as real musicians. I think the suffering public ought to know that in Jim Europe, the race has lost a leader, a benefactor, and a true friend." At the time of his death, he was the best-known black-American bandleader in the United States. He was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Virginia. Europe was mentioned by F. Scott Fitzgerald in his short story "No Flowers". James Reese Europe was born in Mobile, Alabama. Europe moved to New York in 1904. He had a son, James Reese Europe Jr (1917-2001) with Bessie Simms (1888-1931). In 1910, Europe organized the Clef Club, a society for Black Americans in the music industry. In 1912, the club made history when it played a concert at Carnegie Hall for the benefit of the Colored Music Settlement School. The Clef Club Orchestra, while not a jazz band, was the first band to play proto-jazz at Carnegie Hall. It is difficult to overstate the importance of that event in the history of jazz in the United States - it was 12 years before the Paul Whiteman and George Gershwin concert at Aeolian Hall, and 26 years before Benny Goodman's famed concert at Carnegie Hall. The Clef Club's performances played music written solely by Black composers, including Harry T. Burleigh and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Europe's orchestra also included Will Marion Cook, who had not been in Carnegie Hall since his own performance as solo violinist in 1896. Cook was the first black composer to launch full musical productions, fully scored with a cast and story every bit as classical as any Victor Herbert operetta. In the words of Gunther Schuller, Europe "... had stormed the bastion of the white establishment and made many members of New York's cultural elite aware of Negro music for the first time". The New York Times remarked, "These composers are beginning to form an art of their own"; yet by their third performance, a review in Musical America said Europe's Clef Club should "give its attention during the coming year to a movement or two of a Haydn Symphony". In 1913 and 1914, he made a series of phonograph records for the Victor Talking Machine Company. These recordings are some of the best examples of the pre-jazz hot ragtime style of the U.S. Northeast of the 1910s. These are some of the most accepted quotes that are in place to protect the idea that the Original Dixieland Jass Band recorded the first jass (spelling later changed) pieces in 1917 for Victor. Unlike Europe's post-War recordings, the Victor recordings were not called nor marketed as "jazz" at the time, and were far from the first recordings of ragtime by Black American musicians. Neither the Clef Club Orchestra nor the Society Orchestra were small "Dixieland" style bands. They were large symphonic bands to satisfy the tastes of a public that was used to performances by the likes of the John Philip Sousa band and similar organizations very popular at the time. The Clef Orchestra had 125 members and played on various occasions between 1912 and 1915 in Carnegie Hall. It is instructive to read a comment from a music review in the New York Times from March 12, 1914: "... the programme consisted largely of plantation melodies and spirituals [arranged such as to show that] these composers are beginning to develop an art of their own based on their folk material ..." Europe was known for his outspoken personality and unwillingness to bend to musical conventions, particularly in his insistence on playing his own style of music. He responded to criticism by saying, "We have developed a kind of symphony music that, no matter what else you think, is different and distinctive, and that lends itself to the playing of the peculiar compositions of our race ... My success had come ... from a realization of the advantages of sticking to the music of my own people." And later, "We colored people have our own music that is part of us. It's the product of our souls; it's been created by the sufferings and miseries of our race."He was one of the first African American musicians to make it to mainstream. During World War I, Europe obtained a commission in the New York Army National Guard, where he fought as a lieutenant with the 369th Infantry Regiment (the "Harlem Hellfighters") when it was assigned to the French Army. He went on to direct the regimental band to great acclaim. In February and March 1918, James Reese Europe and his military band travelled over 2,000 miles in France, performing for British, French and American military audiences as well as French civilians. Europe's "Hellfighters" also made their first recordings in France for the Pathe brothers. The first concert included a French march, and the Stars And Stripes Forever as well as syncopated numbers such as "The Memphis Blues", which, according to a later description of the concert by band member Noble Sissle "... started ragtimitis in France". After his return home in February 1919, he stated, "I have come from France more firmly convinced than ever that Negros should write Negro music. We have our own racial feeling and if we try to copy whites we will make bad copies ... We won France by playing music which was ours and not a pale imitation of others, and if we are to develop in America we must develop along our own lines." In 1919, Europe made more recordings for Pathe Records. These include both instrumentals and accompaniments with vocalist Noble Sissle who, with Eubie Blake, would later have great success with their 1921 production of Shuffle Along, which gives us the classic song "I'm Just Wild About Harry". May 9, 1932) #dies at the age of 87 at his home in Tullahoma, Tennessee, from a cause related to bone cancer, after a two-month illness. His brother, sister, and son were with him at the time of his death. In the following days, Richard received tributes from many popular musicians, including Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, John Fogerty, Elton John, Lenny Kravitz and more, as well as such as film director John Waters, who were influenced by Richard's music and persona. He is interred at Oakwood University Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Huntsville, Alabama. Little Richard was born Richard Wayne Penniman in Macon, Georgia, the third of twelve children of Leva Mae (nee Stewart) and Charles "Bud" Penniman. His father was a church deacon and a brick mason, who sold bootlegged moonshine on the side and owned a nightclub called the Tip In Inn. His mother was a member of Macon's New Hope Baptist Church. Initially, his first name was supposed to have been "Ricardo", but an error resulted in "Richard" instead. The Penniman children were raised in a neighborhood of Macon called Pleasant Hill. In childhood, he was nicknamed "Lil' Richard" by his family because of his small and skinny frame. A mischievous child who played pranks on neighbors, he began singing in church at a young age. Possibly as a result of complications at birth, he had a slight deformity that left one of his legs shorter than the other. This produced an unusual gait, and he was mocked for his allegedly effeminate appearance. He was an influential figure in popular music and culture for seven decades. Nicknamed "The Innovator, The Originator, and The Architect of Rock and Roll", Richard's most celebrated work dates from the mid-1950s, when his charismatic showmanship and dynamic music, characterized by frenetic piano playing, pounding back beat and raspy shouted vocals, laid the foundation for rock and roll. Richard's innovative emotive vocalizations and uptempo rhythmic music also played a key role in the formation of other popular music genres, including soul and funk. He influenced numerous singers and musicians across musical genres from rock to hip hop; his music helped shape rhythm and blues for generations. "Tutti Frutti" (1955), one of Richard's signature songs, became an instant hit, crossing over to the pop charts in both the United States and overseas in the United Kingdom. His next hit single, "Long Tall Sally" (1956), hit No. 1 on the Billboard Rhythm and Blues Best-Sellers chart, followed by a rapid succession of fifteen more in less than three years. His performances during this period resulted in integration between White Americans and African Americans in his audience. In 1962, during a five-year period in which Richard abandoned rock and roll music for born again Christianity, concert promoter Don Arden persuaded him to tour Europe. During this time, Arden had the Beatles open for Richard on some tour dates, capitalizing on his popularity. Richard advised the Beatles on how to perform his songs and taught the band's member Paul McCartney his distinctive vocalizations. Richard is cited as one of the first crossover black artists, reaching audiences of all races. His music and concerts broke the color line, drawing blacks and whites together despite attempts to sustain segregation. Many of his contemporaries, including Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Bill Haley, Jerry Lee Lewis, the Everly Brothers, Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran, recorded covers of his works. Taken by his music and style, and personally covering four of Richard's songs on his own two breakthrough albums in 1956, Presley told Richard in 1969 that his music was an inspiration to him and that he was "the greatest". Richard was honored by many institutions. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of its first group of inductees in 1986. He was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. April 5, 1926) #dies at his home in Santa Monica, California at the age of 98. His cremains were given to his widow Julie. When Corman's death was announced by his family on Corman's official Instagram account, his sons were not mentioned in the announcement: "He is survived by his wife Julie and his daughters Catherine and Mary.... A devoted and selfless father, he was deeply loved by his daughters."Roger Corman was born Roger William Corman to Catholic mother Anne (nee High) and engineer of Russian Jewish descent father William Corman, and was raised in his mother's Catholic faith. Many of the more than 500 features directed or produced by Corman were low-budget films that later attracted a cult following, such as A Bucket of Blood (1959), The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), The Intruder (1962), X: The Man with the X-ray Eyes (1963), and the counterculture films The Wild Angels (1966) and The Trip (1967). House of Usher (1960) became the first of eight films directed by Corman that were adapted from the tales of Edgar Allan Poe, and which collectively came to be known as the "Poe Cycle". In 1964, Corman became the youngest filmmaker to have a retrospective at the Cinematheque francaise, as well as in the British Film Institute and the Museum of Modern Art. He was the co-founder of New World Pictures, the founder of New Concorde and was a longtime member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He mentored and gave a start to many young film directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Jonathan Demme, Peter Bogdanovich, Joe Dante, John Sayles, and James Cameron, and was highly influential in the New Hollywood filmmaking movement of the 1960s and 1970s. He also helped to launch the careers of actors including Peter Fonda, Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper, Bruce Dern, Diane Ladd, and William Shatner. Corman occasionally acted in films by directors who started with him, including The Godfather Part II (1974), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Philadelphia (1993), Apollo 13 (1995), and The Manchurian Candidate (2004). October 30, 1923) #dies in his sleep of a heart attack in Los Angeles, California at the age of 62. Bernardi is buried at Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Herschel Bernardi was born in New York City to a Yiddish theatre acting family, the younger son of Berel Bernardi and Helen Bernardi. He is best known for his supporting role in the drama television series Peter Gunn (1958-1961) and his leading role in the comedy television series Arnie (1970-1972). The two series earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination and two consecutive Golden Globe Award nominations. On stage, Bernardi appeared in many Broadway musicals. He was nominated for two Tony Awards for his performances in the original production of Zorba and the 1981 revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Herschel was appearing on the stages of 2nd Avenue with his family before he could talk. In the 1930s, Bernardi appeared in the Yiddish films of Edgar G. Ulmer and was later among those actors who made the transition from Yiddish-speaking roles in film to American films. Herschel was the brother of Jack Bernardi (who played Harvey Pulp in "It's a Bikini World)." Bernardi is known for his starring roles on Broadway, including Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof, Zorba, and Bajour. He also appeared in many television programs, including Harbor Command and The Eleventh Hour (both with Wendell Corey) and State Trooper with Rod Cameron. His career as a performer was affected by his being blacklisted for alleged involvement in the Communist Party in the 1950s. From 1958 to 1961, Bernardi co-starred with Craig Stevens in Blake Edwards's television series Peter Gunn. He received his sole Emmy nomination, for Best Supporting Actor (Continuing Character) in a Dramatic Series - 1959, for his portrayal of Lieutenant Jacoby. In 1961 Bernardi guest-starred in a Bonanza episode ("The Smiler") as Clarence Bolling, the vengeful brother of a murdered man. In 1963 he was cast as Mr. Otis, a teacher who mostly ignores his students, in the episode "I Don't Even Live Here" of the NBC education drama series Mr. Novak starring James Franciscus. Bernardi starred in the CBS sitcom Arnie (1970-1972). He starred for two years as someone plucked from the loading dock of a flange company to become an executive. He was nominated for Golden Globe Awards for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy in 1971 and 1972. He voiced Woodhead the rocking horse in Filmation's Journey Back to Oz. He also provided the Cowardly Lion's singing voice while Milton Berle provided the character's speaking voice. He also appeared as Joe Vitelli in the 1977 TV miniseries Seventh Avenue. In Hail to the Chief (1985), a comedy on ABC, Bernardi played Helmut Luger. Bernardi was in several notable films, including Murder by Contract (1958), A Cold Wind in August (1961), The George Raft Story (1961), Irma La Douce (1963), Love with the Proper Stranger (1963), No Deposit, No Return (1976), and The Front (1976), a film about blacklisting in the entertainment industry. Bernardi was the victim of blacklisting during the 1950s, as were several other performers and the screenwriter and director on that film. Bernardi also narrated and emceed The Golden Age of Second Avenue, a 1969 film documentary about the Yiddish theatre movement on New York's Lower East Side of the early-to-mid 20th century (where Bernardi had launched his acting career). Bernardi was a noted voiceover artist and narrator with hundreds of films, commercials and cartoons to his credit and was the original voice of StarKist Tuna animated character "Charlie the Tuna" as well as the original voice of the Jolly Green Giant and was also the narrator of a long-running Tootsie Pop commercial, saying, "How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? The world may never know." Herschel Bernardi also had two minor record hits, 1967's "If I Were a Rich Man", reflecting his success as Tevye, and 1971's "Pencil Marks on the Wall". King became well known as a Jewish comedian and satirist. He was also a serious actor who appeared in a number of movies and television shows. King wrote several books, produced films, and appeared in plays. It also landed him on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's "most wanted list" (the first-ever priest on the list), on the cover of Time magazine, and in prison. His own particular form of militancy and radical spirituality in the service of social and political justice was significant enough, at that time, to "shape the tactics of resistance to the Vietnam War" in the United States. For the rest of his life, Berrigan remained one of the US's leading anti-war activists. In 1980, he founded the Plowshares Movement, an anti-nuclear protest group, that put him back into the national spotlight. He was also an award-winning and prolific author of some 50 books, a teacher, and a university educator. The Catonsville Nine were nine Catholic activists who burned draft files to protest the Vietnam War. On May 17, 1968, they went to the draft board in Catonsville, in the U.S. state of Maryland, took 378 draft files, brought them to the parking lot in wire baskets, dumped them out, poured over them home-made napalm (an incendiary used extensively by the US military in Vietnam), and set them on fire. The Nine were: Father Daniel Berrigan, a Jesuit priest; Philip Berrigan, a former Josephite priest; Br. David Darst, a De La Salle Christian Brother; John Hogan; Tom Lewis, an artist; Marjorie Bradford Melville; Thomas Melville, a former Maryknoll priest; George Mische; and Mary Moylan. Wallace retired as a regular full-time correspondent in 2006, but still appeared occasionally on the series until 2008. He conducted interviews with many politicians, celebrities, and academics, such as Pearl S. Buck, Deng Xiaoping, Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Jiang Zemin, Ruhollah Khomeini, Kurt Waldheim, Frank Lloyd Wright, Yasser Arafat, Menachem Begin, Anwar Sadat, Manuel Noriega, Nobel Prize winner John Nash, Gordon B. He is buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia. He was born Preston Eugene Epps in Mangum, Oklahoma. He learned to play percussion instruments, including the bongos, while he was stationed in Okinawa during the Korean War. After his tour of duty he settled in Southern California, playing in coffee shops and working odd jobs. Arthur Laboe, a local disc jockey, signed him to Original Sound Records, which released his single "Bongo Rock" in 1959. The tune became a hit in the U.S., reaching #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year. The follow-up, "Bongo Bongo Bongo", reached #78 the following year. Original Sound released a full-length LP in 1960, which reached #35 on the Billboard 200. However, further bongo-themed singles, including "Bongo in the Congo", "Bongo Rocket", "Bootlace Bongo", "Bongo Boogie", "Flamenco Bongo", "Mr. Bongo", and "Bongo Shuffle", did not result in any further success. Epps reappeared in 1969 as a bongo player in the film Girl In Gold Boots. He continued on as a session musician in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1973, the Incredible Bongo Band recorded "Bongo Rock" and released it as a single. Her funeral took place at St. Ignatius Loyola Church on Park Avenue in New York, where she had been a member. Thousands gathered and attendees included: Leontyne Price, Dionne Warwick, Liza Minnelli, Jessye Norman, Chita Rivera, Cicely Tyson, Diahann Carroll, Leslie Uggams, Lauren Bacall, Robert Osborne, Audra McDonald, and Vanessa Williams. Her remains were cremated, and the disposition of her ashes are not publicly known. Lena Horne was born Lena Mary Calhoun Horne in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn into the African American upper class. Lena Mary Calhoun Horne had a career that spanned over 70 years appearing in film, television, and theater. Horne joined the chorus of the Cotton Club at the age of 16 and became a nightclub performer before moving to Hollywood, where she had small parts in numerous movies, and more substantial parts in the 1943 films Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather. Because of the Red Scare and her political activism, Horne found herself blacklisted and unable to get work in Hollywood. Returning to her roots as a nightclub performer, Horne took part in the March on Washington in August 1963 and continued to work as a performer, both in nightclubs and on television while releasing well-received record albums. She announced her retirement in March 1980, but the next year starred in a one-woman show, Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music, which ran for more than three hundred performances on Broadway. She then toured the country in the show, earning numerous awards and accolades. May 9, 1967: #DOTD: #RIP: Philippa Duke Schuyler, beautiful and brilliant African American child prodigy, concert pianist, composer, author, and journalist, hailed as "The Shirley Temple Of American Negroes" (b. August 2, 1931) #dies after she she boards a United States Army helicopter on a mission to evacuate Vietnamese orphans from Da Nang. The helicopter crashed into Da Nang Bay. She survived the crash but could not swim and drowned. Her remains were cremated, and the final disposition of her ashes are not publicly disclosed. She was the second of two American women journalists to die in Vietnam. Some 2,000 mourners attended her funeral at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City on May 18, 1967. A court of inquiry found that the pilot had deliberately cut his motor and descended in an uncontrolled glide - possibly in an attempt to give his civilian passengers an insight into the dangers of flying in a combat zone - and lost control of the aircraft. Schuyler's parents established the Philippa Schuyler Memorial Foundation in her memory. Schuyler's mother was profoundly affected by her death and committed suicide a few days before the second anniversary of her death in 1969. Philippa Schuyler was born Philippa Duke Schuyler in Harlem, New York City, the only child of prominent black journalist George Schuyler and Josephine Cogdell Schuyler, a white Texan heiress, one-time Mack Sennett bathing beauty and the granddaughter of slave owners. For three years before Schuyler's birth, her mother ate only natural and raw food, avoided meat, and went on a body- and mind-preparing regime to cleanse her system and prepare to bear a "superior" child. Mrs. Schuyler believed that genius could best be developed by a diet consisting exclusively of raw foods. As a result, Philippa grew up in her New York City apartment eating a diet predominantly of raw carrots, peas, and yams and raw steak. She was given a daily ration of cod liver oil and lemon slices in place of sweets. "When we travel," Mrs. Schuyler said, "Philippa and I amaze waiters. You have to argue with most waiters before they will bring you raw meat. I guess it is rather unusual to see a little girl eating a raw steak." Her parents believed that intermarriage would "invigorate" both races, produce extraordinary offspring, and help solve social problems in the United States. She was recognized as a prodigy at an early age. In 1933, a New York Herald Tribune writer called her the "Negro Baby." Schuyler reportedly knew the alphabet at 19 months and was able to read and write at the age of two. By four years old, she could play compositions by Schumann and Mozart and was writing her own. Her intelligence quotient (IQ) at the age of six was found to be 185. Her mother was an overbearing stage mother who entered her in every possible music competition. Schuyler performed public piano recitals and radio broadcasts by the age of four. Schuyler won numerous music competitions, including the New York Philharmonic Young People's Concerts at Carnegie Hall. In June 1936, four-year-old Schuyler won her first gold medal at the annual tournament sponsored by the National Guild Of Piano Teachers, where she performed ten original compositions. She won eight consecutive prizes from the New York Philharmonic Young People's Concerts at Carnegie Hall, then was barred from competing because the other children had little chance to win against her. She also won gold medals from the Music Education League and from the City of New York. Schuyler's piano recitals and radio broadcasts attracted press coverage. Among her admirers was New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, who visited her at home on more than one occasion and declared June 19, 1940 "Philippa Duke Schuyler Day" at the New York World's Fair, where she performed two piano recitals. At age nine, Schuyler became the subject of "Evening With A Gifted Child", a profile written by New Yorker correspondent Joseph Mitchell, who heard several of her early compositions. He noted that she addressed both her parents by their first names. Schuyler completed the eighth grade at the age of 11 and by the age of 14 she had composed 200 musical selections. At 11, she became the youngest member of the National Association for American Composers and Conductors. By the time she reached adolescence, Schuyler was touring constantly in the United States and overseas. In addition to her native English language, she spoke French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and German. She was also a devout Catholic. At 15, Schuyler graduated from Father Young S. J. Memorial High School, the Schola Cantorum of Pius X School of Liturgical Music. After graduating, she traveled the world performing for dignitaries. She performed with the New York Philharmonic at Lewisohn Stadium. Schuyler continued her studies at Manhattanville College. Her talent as a pianist was widely acknowledged, although many critics believed that her forte lay in playing vigorous pieces and criticized her style when tackling more nuanced works. Acclaim for her performances led to her becoming a role model for many children in the United States, but Schuyler's own childhood was blighted when, during her teenage years, her parents showed her the scrapbooks they had compiled recording her life and career. The books contained numerous newspaper clippings in which both George and Josephine Schuyler commented on their beliefs and ambitions for their daughter. Realization that she had been conceived and raised, in a sense, as a genetic experiment, robbed the pianist of many of the illusions that had made her earlier youth a happy one. As she grew older, she had trouble coming to terms with her mixed-race heritage, having grown disillusioned with the racial and gender prejudice she encountered, particularly when performing in the United States. She had trouble finding acceptance by the classical elite in the United States, so she attempted to find an audience abroad and spent much of her musical career playing overseas. She fled to Latin America, where people of mixed races were more prevalent. She chose a voluntary exile of traveling and performing in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, Africa and Europe. She played at the inauguration of three successive presidents in Haiti. In Africa, she performed for various notables such as Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, at Independence Day celebrations for Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Kasavubu of the Congo, President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, and for Albert Schweitzer in his isolated leper colony in Lamberene. She began passing for white in 1959, at first so she could travel in South Africa, then again years later thinking she would have a better career if she reentered the American concert scene as a white performer. As her concert schedule decreased in the early 1960s, Schuyler followed her father George Schuyler into journalism in her thirties. She supplemented her limited income by writing about her travels. She published more than 100 newspaper and magazine articles internationally, and was one of the few black writers for the United Press International. Schuyler published four non-fiction books: Adventures in Black and White (a biography, 1960); Who Killed the Congo? (a summary of the Belgian Congo's fight for independence, 1962); Jungle Saints (about Catholic missionaries, 1963); and Kingdom of Dreams (a quixotic study of scientific dream interpretation written with her mother, 1966). Schuyler's personal life was frequently unhappy since childhood. Her mother punished her severely with whippings, and she never made friends because she did not attend school regularly. When she did attend school, she was ahead of other children her age, and was usually the only minority. Schuyler developed an inferiority complex about her race and viewed her blackness as a "stigma". Schuyler rejected many of her parents' values and viewed their interracial marriage as a mistake. She increasingly became a vocal feminist and made many attempts to pass herself off as a woman of Ibero-American descent named Felipa Monterro y Schuyler. Although Schuyler engaged in a number of affairs, she never married. In 1965, she endured a dangerous late-term abortion in Tijuana after an affair with Ghanaian diplomat Georges Apedo-Amah, because she did not want to have a child with a black man; Schuyler wanted to marry a white man to boost her career and produce offspring she deemed ideal. Schuyler and her father were members of the John Birch Society. In 1966, Schuyler traveled to South Vietnam to perform for the troops and Vietnamese groups. She returned in April 1967 as a war correspondent for William Loeb's Manchester Union Leader and served as a lay missionary. In early May, Schuyler planned to leave Vietnam, but extended her stay to bring Catholic children from Hue, where there was tension between Catholic and Buddhist factions. Philippa Schuyler Middle School for the Gifted and Talented in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York is dedicated to preserving the memory of the child prodigy by offering an arts-focused education to New York City children. It was reported in 2004 that Halle Berry owned the film rights to Schuyler's biography.
